SAN DIEGO - The 12th Marine Corps District Family Readiness Office held a two-day seminar March 28 and 29 at the 12th Marine Corps District headquarters aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego to introduce Marine spouses to recruiting duty.
A total of 19 attended the seminar, which was open to the spouses of the previous three Basic Recruiters Course classes. Lectures and discussions provided spouses with resources needed when living without the support of a military installation nearby, including classes on finances, Tricare, and transitioning between schools.
“The seminar was Recruiting 101 for spouses, and we kept the theme throughout the two days they were with us,” said Maria RodriguezCallejas, Marine Corps Family Team Building Trainer at the 12th District. “We wanted to discuss with them the issues and trends they might come across in their first year, so they’re as knowledgeable as possible for a successful tour on recruiting duty.”
The orientation course is scheduled for March and September.
RodriguezCallejas said spouses loved the class, and they all learned more about the responsibilities of a Marine recruiter.
“I really recommend this course to all the spouses,” said Cassandra Montanez, Recruiting Substation Vancouver. “I walked away encouraged about my husband’s job, and I had more insight on what he did on a day-to-day basis.”
RodriguezCallejas also said due to the effectiveness of the seminar, they will try to expand those in the future.
“This time, we had guest presenters we thought would be of use to them, such as stress management,” said RodriguezCallejas. “In future orientation courses, we are going to try to incorporate an experienced spouse panel. It would be an important part of learning from those who were successful before them.”
The seminar culminated Saturday with a social event in the Gaslamp Quarter, attended by 12th District Commanding Officer Col. Eric C. Hastings, 12th District Sergeant Major Sgt. Maj. Willie T. Ward, and 12th District Chaplain Steven R. Morgan.
The next Family Readiness symposium scheduled is the Teen Summit, slated for June 20 to 21, 2014. For information on how you and your teenager can participate in the all-expenses paid trip, visit http://www.dvidshub.net/news/124690/12th-mcd-teen-summit-2014
