News: USS Shiloh wins battle E
AT SEA – The crew of the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67) was awarded the 2013 Battle Effectiveness "E" Award for Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5, March 21.
This Battle "E" distinction was earned while conducting a selected restricted availability (SRA) and achieving certification in multiple warfare areas, as well as, successfully completing an engineering light-off assessment.
“I cannot be prouder of all the achievements and accomplishments of Shiloh,” said Capt. Kurush Morris, Shiloh’s commanding officer. “The crew attacks the challenges and overcomes them with gusto, which embraces our motto of ‘drive fast and shoot guns.’”
The Battle “E” is awarded every year to ships and crews that demonstrate the maximum condition of readiness in their groups over a year long evaluation and their capability to perform their wartime tasks. The Battle "E" competition is conducted to strengthen individual command performance, boost overall force readiness and to acknowledge outstanding performance. The award symbolizes the overall readiness of the command to carry out its assigned mission and tasking.
Ships that are awarded Battle “E” exhibited superior performance in the following six excellence categories: Maritime Warfare; Engineering and Survivability; Command, Control, Communications, and Information Warfare; Logistics Management; Commander Naval Surface Force Safety Award and the Efficiency Excellence Award.
“I am glad all the hard work and dedication that Shiloh endured in 2013 paid off and rewarded with the Battle “E”,” said Chief Engineman John C. Rainey. “It was a very difficult year with all the qualifications, but Shiloh overcame all the qualifications and certifications with diligence and perseverance.”
The Shiloh crew is in high spirits and proud of their efforts accomplished in 2013.
The crew is enthusiastic, determined, and looking forward to upcoming patrols and certifications.
“I take pride that I am on one of the best ships on the waterfront,” said Gas Turbine Systems Technician Mechanical First Class Michael McAnderson. “This is a milestone to us. Not only are we ballistic missile defense, but we are amongst the best. Earning the Battle “E” is the combination of all the hard work we have done and showing everyone that we are good at what we do.”
Shiloh is forward deployed to Yokosuka supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
