OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea – Five members of 7th Air Force had the unique opportunity to help mentor more than 500 Republic of Korea Army NCOs at the ROK NCO Academy Lessons Learned Lecture and Discussion Panel in Iksan City, March 25.
The panel brought combat veterans from each of the U.S. military services to share their personal insights and joint combat experience with future ROK enlisted leaders.
Visiting U.S. NCOs were treated to exercise demonstrations that included urban operations, squad live-fire and combatives. Following lunch, the ROK NCOs gathered to hear what the U.S. combat veterans had to say about what they might face in battle.
“As the ROK Army lacks recent combat experience, this event provided the perfect forum to ask hard questions by NCOs for NCOs,” said Army Maj. Jason Kim, ROK Army liaison officer.
Questions ranged from “how do you motivate your troops?” to “what is the most lethal weapon in the Army’s arsenal?”
Master Sgt. Mitchell Polu, 604th Air Support Operations Squadron operations superintendent, said it was important to engage the ROK NCOs in a forum like this and share what they’ve learned after more than a decade of war.
“The NCO corps, regardless of branch of service or nation, is the backbone of any military,” he explained. “As a Battlefield Airman, chances are likely I will be seeing these ROK NCOs on the battlegrounds. If and when the call to arms comes, we as a united front, backboned by the NCO corps with the same principles and mindset, will be ready to answer.”
