YOKOSUKA, Japan – Sailors stationed aboard the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) were selected for senior leadership and officer programs, Feb. 28.
Twelve master chief petty officers, senior chief petty officers and petty officer first classes were selected for command master chief, command senior chief, warrant officer and limited duty officer programs.
“The right sailors were definitely chosen,” said George Washington’s Command Master Chief Shaun Brahmsteadt. “It shows that what we’re doing here to prepare our sailors for the next level is being done correctly. It’s a great attribute on both our chain of command and our sailors.”
There were 418 senior sailors selected for the four programs Navy-wide.
“I feel great and a little nervous,” said Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Dwight Clarke, from Queens, N.Y., selected for the command senior chief program. “I’m walking into an unknown; it’s a different detailing process with these programs.”
Master Chief Quartermaster Mike Mullenhour was selected for the command master chief program; Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Robert Stolt, along with Clarke, was selected for the command senior chief program; Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Courtney Craig, Chief Electronics Technician Jason Dollison, Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) Nelson Lubin, Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) Luis Martinez, Yeomans 1st Class Jamichael Crump and James LaCour were selected for the limited duty officer program; and Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Eric Bickel and Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) Tony Lawrence were selected for the chief warrant officer program.
“These are all great programs,” said Brahmsteadt. “We need quality leaders in these positions, so it’s important to have outstanding senior chiefs, chiefs and first class [petty officers] in these programs. They’re the ones out there in the fleet who are leading and training our junior sailors.”
George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interest of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
