YOKOSUKA, Japan – The health services department aboard the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) conducted a cardiopulmonary resuscitation training class for sailors, March 3.

Sailors attended the class to become CPR qualified in order to be first responders in case of a shipboard emergency.

“We are trying to get as many sailors CPR qualified so that they are able to provide emergency care to injured personnel,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Ernest Quimby, from Dickinson, Texas. “This way, interventions can be done for victims that don’t have a pulse so when they get here, there’s a higher chance that we will be able to help the victim make a full recovery.”

CPR is not a mandatory course, but it is encouraged and is also part of a prerequisite for those who look to become enlisted surface or air warfare qualified.

“Even though this isn’t a requirement in itself, it’s a requirement for those who wish to earn their warfare pin,” said Quimby. “We are able to get more people to volunteer that way. There are also people who just want to be able to help out if they see someone in need of assistance.”

Two instructors conduct CPR classes in order to qualify 12 sailors per training session.

“The more sailors who can provide emergency care will make the ship a safer place,” said Quimby. “Disaster can strike anytime and without warning; anyone can save someone’s life just by having the basic knowledge of CPR.”

George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
