YOKOSUKA, Japan - Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the food service team aboard the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) collaborated to host a Super Bowl XLVIII party, Feb. 3.

Chicken wings, pizza, sub sandwiches, sodas, bottled water, chips and ice cream were a few items served in front of flat screens, a projector and sound system for the crew.

“MWR provided the screen and ice cream from Baskin Robbins,” said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Tiffara Jones, from Los Angeles. “We provided the pizza and wings, and the sailors love it because there is food everywhere! I’m excited myself!”

MWR provides ways for sailors to unwind from the demanding schedule of being forward-deployed.

“We put together our annual George Washington Super Bowl party,” said Momoyo Harris, MWR’s director aboard George Washington. “We gave out prizes to sailors chosen from the crowd. I hope that this gives them an opportunity to relax and enjoy the festivities.”

During the game, sailors won various prizes including movie tickets to Western Digital terabyte hard drives, 32 gigabyte iPods, iPod docks, iPads, GoPros, Kindle Fires and more.

According to Operation Specialist 3rd Class Tyler Hollis, from Columbus, Ohio, the food and setup was great. When he was given a raffle ticket, he expected a small prize; however, it was a complete surprise to win a 32-gigabyte iPod touch.

George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interest of the U.S. and its partners and allies in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
