FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – Col. James F. Reckard III, commander, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, was surrounded by many installation leaders and Soldiers of the 4th MEB, as he and his senior enlisted advisor, Command Sgt. Maj. Federico E. Boyce, held a ceremony where they both rose the unit flag, or guidon, to officially take possession of their newly completed headquarters building, Dec. 4. In addition to the guidon being hoisted on the new flag pole, there was a freshly painted “Dauntless” rock at the entrance commemorating the new home of the “Dauntless” brigade.
The Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental design-certified, 40,000 square foot structure which was designed for the brigade and received the notice to proceed with construction around mid-2011.
“The unit’s engineering section meet with and used priorities provided by the entire brigade staff to work with Fort Leonard Wood’s Directorate of Public Works and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to design a unique facility for the 4th MEB’s mission requirements,” said Capt. George Perkinson, engineering officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th MEB, 1st Inf. Div.
Previously spread out among several buildings on the installation, staff sections from the brigade began moving into the new building a few weeks ago.
“The opening of this building is a landmark event for the 4th MEB and it signifies the completion of at least eight years worth of planning,” Reckard said. “We have to recognize that our nation has granted quite a bit of its treasure, a whole lot of money, to make this building possible. As a result our headquarters will have a place that we can be very proud of. It’s the type of building one only dreams about ... so it shows the people of the United States care quite a bit about the U.S. Army. They care about you as a Soldier and all of us as leaders to bestow us with something this grand.”
After the flag was raised the hand-painted Dauntless rock was revealed to the crowd and brigade senior enlisted advisor, Command Sgt. Maj. Federico E. Boyce called everyone to attention to recite the 1st Infantry Division’s “Long Motto Call.”
Reckard closed the ceremony with the following statement to those in attendance.
“This is our headquarters and we are going to raise our flag in front of it and be proud every single day that we enter the new Dauntless headquarters”, Reckard.
