FORT BELVOIR, Va. - Representatives from the clothing and textiles industry met with Defense Logistics Agency and military officials to discuss better ways of doing business during a “Captains of Industry” meeting Dec. 4 at the McNamara Headquarters Complex.

“My desire is for us to all have a relationship so we can decide strategically how we’re going to do business. It’s important that we work through issues that are somewhat strategic in nature that aren’t necessarily related to the contracts,” DLA Director Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek said.

The event gives attendees a chance to bring up issues that affect the clothing and textiles industry at large. It is the third time such a meeting has been held for the supply chain and brought together a record number of more than 100 participants.

The use of reverse auctions was a topic of discussion during previous meetings.

“The homework we assigned to ourselves was to figure out if that’s the best way to get the best deal for the government and, beyond that, to decide if reverse auctions were a healthy way to do business with [the textiles industry],” the director said. “Fabric suppliers are getting fewer and far between, so based on that we decided they weren’t the best way to do business.”

Officials agreed that a common goal in coming years must be maintaining a viable and healthy domestic industrial base that includes large, small and mandatory sources.

Other topics of discussion included DLA’s effort to reduce the time it takes to award contracts, surge requirements, flexible contracts, and innovation and product diversification
