NOSC North Island holds change of command

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Navy Operational Support Center North Island held a change of command ceremony aboard Naval Air Station North Island July 27.

Capt. Jeff McIrvin relieved Capt. Russ Larratt as NOSC North Island commanding officer.

Rear Adm. Paul Sohl, commander, Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, commended Larratt and his tenure as commanding officer.

"As commanding officer of NOSC North Island, Russ's job is to ensure that ability for individuals or units to surge around the globe at a moment's notice," Sohl said. "Capt. Larratt's responsibility is to maintain the highest state of mobilization readiness for more than 1,700 selected reserve warriors and enable them to provide operational support on a daily basis to more than 40 active commands."

Larratt bid farewell by citing many specific examples of "astonishing" and "unforgettable" performances of duty by his sailors.

"Just an exceptional group of sailors," Larratt said. "They are the ones who do the heavy lifting here. They are the ones who ensure business gets done. They are the ones who provide the support to the unit commanders and the selected reserve warriors who are here at the NOSC. I will miss them the most."

Turning to his successor, Larratt confirmed his confidence in the staff of NOSC North Island and in McIrvin's capability to lead the second largest operational support centers in the Navy Reserve. Prior to reporting, McIrvin formerly served as the operations support officer for Commander, U.S 3rd Fleet.

"Many times, new commanders can give rudder orders to the command as they come in the door," McIrvin said. "So NOSC North Island, I am keeping the steering needle right where it lays. In other words, keep doing exactly what you are doing."

Sailors of NOSC North Island also commended Capt. Larratt on a job well done and bid him fair winds and following seas.

"We are now looked at on every level, getting compared to other NOSC's. Capt. Larratt set the standards for us," said Aviation Ordnanceman (AW) 1st Class Marco V. Pumayugra, assigned to the operations department at NOSC North Island.

Larratt will report to Commander Naval Air Force Reserve, also on NASNI.
