CAMP SHELBY, Miss. - Early morning physical training, firing ranges, vehicle maneuvers and tactical exercises are commonplace during annual training. This year, the 377th Theater Sustainment Command has incorporated something new in its annual training exercise at Camp Shelby, Miss., June 1-14.
Structured Self-Development is a new Web-based training that is used to enhance soldier skills, knowledge, behavior and experiences. Army Regulation 350-1 defines SSD as required learning that continues throughout a soldier's career and is closely linked and synchronized with classroom and on-the-job training.
The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s Institute developed SSD for Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development and the U.S. Sergeants Major Academy to add a clear focus and structure to self-development. Four courses have been developed and can be accessed through the Army Career Tracker or Army Knowledge Online from anywhere in the world.
The 377th TSC realizes the importance of this training in the development of its soldiers. Therefore, during this year’s annual training exercise soldiers are being given the time and resources to work on their SSD.
377th HHC Commander Capt. Joseph Konyha and 377th HHC 1SG Daniel Beard have provided their soldiers with a SNAP (SIPR NIPR Access Point) Package that provides internet access and multiple laptops that troops can use to work on SSD in conjunction with their field training exercises.
“SSD is a great training tool that provides continuing education to Soldiers and the ability to train individually,” said Konyha. “When properly incorporated into the training calendar, the benefits to the soldier, the unit and the Army are invaluable.”
Troops who are participating in this year’s annual training are already seeing how SSD and on-the-job training work hand-in-hand.
“It’s very beneficial being able to work on SSD at annual training because some of the things we learn during these online classes, like detainee operations, we are actually putting to practice in our training exercises in the field,” said Spc. Derek Branch, 377th TSC HHC Food Services.
Since the beginning of the 2013 fiscal year, soldiers must complete SSD-1 in order to attend the Warrior Leadership Course. This not only affects junior soldiers but all troops because SSD is a prerequisite for all Non-Commissioned Officer Education System courses.
“SSD expands the knowledge of me as a soldier, it reinforces the basic leadership skills I have been taught,” said Spc. Thomas Gritten, 377th TSC HHC Motorpool. “These are skills that I need to further my career and I’m glad that I have the opportunity to work on this during annual training.”
According to Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond Chandler, the Army already has seen stronger success in WLC by soldiers who have completed SSD-1.
“This program works, that is why the Army is backing it up with such strong rules,” said Chandler. “The strong emphasis on SSD and professional schools is all about leadership. SSD bridges the gap between operational and institutional experiences, and helps to make a well-rounded NCO.”
