Coast Guard joins Park View Elementary promote physical activity for 'Field Day'
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A core volunteer group of Coast Guardsmen helped motivate youngsters at Park View Elementary School, June 7, 2013, to get physical and have fun as they close out the school year.
Lt. Mark T. Bender, local coordinator for the Coast Guard’s Partnership in Education, led volunteers from the 5th Coast Guard District and Atlantic Area commands.
Through PIE, volunteers team up with local school systems, community organizations and businesses in an effort to enhance educational opportunities and instill a sense of core values into children across the country. Since 1991, PIE has seen more than 14,000 active duty members, reservists; civilians and auxiliary members give more than 200,000 hours of their own time, primarily in communities with large underserved populations, serving as mentors, tutors and life coaches.
