NEW YORK – Rear Adm. Steven Poulin, director of governmental and public affairs, U.S. Coast Guard, accepted 29 pieces of artwork on behalf of the Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP), during a ceremony held at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, Thursday.

For more than 30 years, COGAP has connected professional artists who volunteer their time with access to capturing the Coast Guard’s 11 missions.

Five of the 23 artists deployed to an asset overseas while other artists depicted the service’s response to news-making events including Super Storm Sandy along with national security missions, training, and search and rescue.

Before the artwork is displayed in offices of Congress, senior government offices, museums and other Coast Guard locations nationwide, the 29 paintings by 23 artists compete to win the George Gray Award. Named for the founder of COGAP, the award is presented to a Coast Guard artist for their artistic achievement in capturing an aspect of the Coast Guard.

“I always wanted a way to show my respect and admiration for people who did serve, “ said Tom Hedderich, a native of Westtown, N.Y., a member of the Salmagundi Club and COGAP artist. “I was able to literally illustrate my respect for the people who do serve.”

Hedderich explained that he looked for scenes that want to be painted and felt the photo he picked was just stunning to him.

Throughout the course of history, the primary way to communicate and document military action was by means of paintings. Through this form, artists have been able to portray significant wars, portraits of military leaders and modes of military transportation.
