GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – An U.S. Air Force major here has been selected for a distinguished alumni award by a nonprofit organization affiliated with Duke University.

Maj. Kimberly L. Garbett, an international programs manager with the Partnership for Peace Consortium at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, was named one of three distinguished alumni of the Duke Talent Identification Program for 2013 May 20. Garbett is the first military recipient of the alumni award.

Garbett competed with more than 250 others for selection following an open nomination process. Along with the major, the program selected a New York Times bestselling author and the chief executive officer of an investment firm in Dubai. Other distinguished alumni include doctors, educators, entertainment professionals and others.

The talent identification program’s “7th-Grade Talent Search,” which Garbett participated in as a child, identifies students across the U.S. who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level achievement test. As part of the program, these students take above-level college-entrance exams to learn more about their abilities. In 2013, more than 75,000 children participated in the program.

According to its web site, “the Duke University Talent Identification Program is an international leader in identifying and serving the educational needs of academically gifted youth. Through identification, recognition, challenging educational programs, information, advocacy and research, Duke TIP provides resources to gifted students, their parents, educators, and schools for the development of the students’ optimal potential.”
