    412th Theater Engineer Command

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas - The 4th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) received the Meritorious Unit Commendation May 11, 2013, from The Department of the Army for the unit’s exceptional duty in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The 4th ESC received the citation as the Joint Sustainment Command-Afghanistan (JSC-A) from July 25, 2011, to May 8, 2012. Its mission was to provide command and control of sustainment operation and to support coalition forces, and partner with Afghan National Security Forces in order to develop its sustainment capability.

During their 10 months in theater, soldiers performed hundreds of missions. Some of these missions include: issuing more than 421 million gallons of fuel, delivering more than 45 million pounds of mail, receiving more than 8 million pounds of ammunition, delivering more than 25,000 airdrop bundles, and moving more than 45,000 air passengers per month.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Deangelo Grant deployed with the unit as the deputy air mobility officer in charge.

"Our normal duty day averaged 13 to 16 hours. The operation tempo was so that we really felt engaged,” Grant said. “Working in the joint operation spectrum was a huge learning experience for me. It taught me how we fight collectively.”

The award announcement from the U.S. Army Human Resources Command reads that the unit “demonstrated the ability to innovate and accomplish the mission beyond the call of duty. Their ability to support the senior sustainment command for all of Afghanistan has been the foundation upon which freedom was sustained.”

The “dedication and outstanding performance of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Sustainment Command are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon the unit, United States Forces-Afghanistan and the United States Army,” wrote Chief Warrant Officer 4 Elisa Robinson, deputy chief of Awards and Decorations Branch with U.S. Army Human Resources Command, in the award announcement dated May 11, 2013.

The 4th ESC mobilized 254 soldiers for the mission in Afghanistan. They trained at Fort Hood, Texas, before heading overseas to Afghanistan to assume the role of the JSC-A.

By virtue of the award, eligible soldiers of the command are eligible to update their records and wear the award on their Army dress uniform.

The award is still subject to final confirmation in Department of the Army general orders.
