GOLDSBORO, N.C. - State leaders in many fields including education, commerce, private industry and government met for the North Carolina Advisory Commission on Military Affairs at the Lane Tree Conference center here, April 18.
Their goal: to speak with one voice for the military community in North Carolina.
Their challenges included managing several types of organizations in accordance with sequestration fiscal issues, possible force reduction, local and state economic growth and education for military and their families.
"The National Guard's membership on the commission is indicative of the General Assembly's awareness of the National Guard's role as a ready force to the Governor and our national security," said F. Doug Phelps, military advisor to the commission.
Senior military leaders briefed the commission on the needs of their members, families and communities. College executives, business leaders, government representatives local, state and federal leaned forward and took notes as the military officers asked for their help.
"The governor and the legislature want to know how the commanders feel," said John A Nicholson, military affairs adviser to the Office of the Governor.
The commission meets quarterly to advise the Governor of North Carolina and Secretary of Commerce on military issues including infrastructure, state military driven economic development and quality of life.
"We get everybody organized to connect the community with the military," said Dr. Freda Porter, the commission's chair.
Phelps said that the commission members are the liaison between North Carolina's extensive military presence and their neighbors, state government, business and education communities.
