BALAD, Iraq -- Responsibility for command and control of dental activities in southern Iraq and area medical support transferred between units in two separate ceremonies, Jan. 15.
The 257th Medical Company (Dental Services) from Fort Bragg, N.C transferred authority for command and control of dental services at 10 sites throughout southern Iraq to the 464th Medical Company (Dental Services), from Landstuhl, Germany. The 257th Med. Co. is the only Airborne dental unit in the Army. During the ceremony, several members of the outgoing unit received the Bronze Star Medal for their outstanding accomplishments during Operation Iraqi Freedom II.
In a separate ceremony, the 118th Medical Battalion (Area Support) from Newington, Conn. transferred authority to Task Force 261 Area Support Medical Battalion (Airborne) from Fort Bragg, N.C. TF 261 ASMB is now responsible for providing area medical support to units spread throughout Iraq, from the Turkish border in the north to Talil Air Base in the south. The task force has the largest footprint of any battalion-sized unit in the Iraqi Theater.
