USS JOHN C. STENNIS - Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 held their Sailor of the Year ceremony aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Jan. 25.
Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Joshua Donohue, from Douglas, Ga., was announced as the Sailor of the Year during a dinner and banquet that also honored his nine fellow nominees.
“This is a great accomplishment for me, but I would not be here without the help of everyone working with me,” said Donohue, currently assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 14. “Our own success is driven by the success of everyone around us.”
Capt. Dell Bull, commander of CVW 9, began the ceremony with a speech commending the Sailor of the Year selectees for their distinguished service.
“Through their diligence, devotion to duty, and commitment to their respective commands, our Sailor of the Year selectees demonstrate the very best of Carrier Air Wing 9,” said Bull. “Competition was keen throughout the entire air wing, and I am very proud to recognize these dedicated enlisted leaders.”
The banquet concluded with a ceremonious cake cutting featuring Bull and Donohue.
“It’s always good to spend time with the best our Navy has to offer,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Fermin Timothee, from Chicago, CVW 9’s command master chief. “Each and every one of these Sailors is the epitome of what hard work and dedication can bring to our organization. They work above and beyond their peers and maintain a standard that our air wing and each individual squadron have set for everyone to see.”
“I feel honored and privileged to represent my command,” said Donohue. “VFA-14 has a long and distinguished history and I am proud to contribute to that with this accomplishment.”
Donohue will proceed to be a candidate for the U.S. Pacific Fleet Sailor of the Year award, and then possibly compete for the Chief of Naval Operations Sailor of the Year award in Washington.
The Sailor of the Year program was established in 1972 by retired Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, former chief of naval operations, and retired Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet to recognize Sailors who perform above and beyond what was asked of them at their respective command.
The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, consisting of Stennis, CVW 9, Destroyer Squadron 21, and guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) are forward deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility to strengthen regional partnerships, sustain maritime security, and support combatant commander requirements for assets in the area.
