A memorial ceremony is taking place at what appears to be a military cemetery, with individuals wearing matching navy blue jackets and maroon/red berets laying flowers at grave markers. Multiple wreaths made of red poppies are displayed on black stands, suggesting a commemorative event such as a WWII remembrance ceremony. The patches visible on the jackets appear to reference the 82nd Airborne Division insignia.

An attendee lays a wreath during the Operation Market Garden Commemoration Jonkerbos ceremony in Nijmegen, Netherlands, Sept. 19, 2026. Jonkerbos War Cemetery in Nijmegen, Netherlands, contains the graves of more than 1,600 Commonwealth and Allied service members killed during World War II. The cemetery also sits near ground used by Soldiers of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment as they prepared for the Waal River crossing during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. As the United States marks 250 years of independence, Operation Market Garden commemorations offer a living example of the long relationship between Americans and the Dutch. From Dutch trade and support during the American Revolution, symbolized by the First Salute at St. Eustatius in 1776, to American and Allied forces fighting together in the Netherlands in 1944, that history continues today through communities that preserve the memory of the those who served and through and enduring U.S.-Dutch partnership.
