Two military personnel in camouflage uniforms and helmets are running across a wooden bridge/plank obstacle on a training course. The foreground soldier is carrying what appears to be an M16-style rifle at the ready position while mid-stride. The setting is an open grassy field with pine trees in the background and large concrete culvert sections visible as course obstacles.

Rct. Robert Marcotte, 23, leads Rct. Darrin Allen Pacheco, 21, across a bridge during the Crucible on Aug. 8, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The Crucible is the 54-hour culminating event of Marine Corps recruit training. During this time, recruits are often pushed past their physical and mental limits as they reach toward the title of Marine. Marcotte, a Marietta, Ga., native and Pacheco, from Virginia Beach, Va., are scheduled to graduate with platoon 3057, Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, on Aug. 16, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
