This year’s class of chief petty officer selectees performs the annual reenactment of the Battle of Đồng Xoài at the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport crane yard, Sept. 10, in memory of Construction Mechanic Third Class (CM3) Marvin Shields, the only Seabee to have earned the Medal of Honor.
During the reenactment, Sailors assigned to various units across NCBC Gulfport tried to recreate the heroic actions leading up to Shields’ death during the 1965 battle. The chief petty officers recreate the annual reenactment to honor Marvin Shields and to serve as a living history account of that fateful battle.
