Capt. Tate Metlen, commanding officer of the Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Gulfport, signed a suicide prevention proclamation at the Fleet and Family Support Center, Sept. 8, 2026.
The U.S. Navy officially observes suicide prevention month throughout September, which serves as a launchpad for year-round conversations and campaigns to promote psychological health and connectedness. The suicide prevention program focuses on the year-round culture of suicide prevention with the goal of building a continuous supportive environment beyond a 30-day effort. The program also promotes the 1 small ACT campaign by encouraging early intervention, recognizing warning signs, practicing self-care, and ensuring lethal means safety.
Sailors and families are encouraged to lean on command leadership, chaplains, counselors, and the Fleet and Family Support Center early before a challenge becomes a crisis.
