CAMP ZAMA, Japan — Maj. Gen. Akiyoshi Sasajima, Director General of the Bilateral Coordination Department, Ground Component Command, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), on behalf of Gen. Masayoshi Arai, Chief of Staff, JGSDF, presented the Defense Cooperation Medal, a Certificate of Appreciation, and a commemorative JGSDF coin to Col. James C. Cheney, Deputy Commander, U.S. Army Japan, during a ceremony at Camp Zama on Sept. 10. The prestigious honors recognized Cheney for his exceptional dedication, leadership, and lasting contributions to enhancing bilateral defense cooperation between the U.S. Army and the JGSDF throughout his tenure as deputy commander. Cheney played a critical role in advancing bilateral training, expanding multi-domain interoperability, and deepening mutual trust between the two land forces, further reinforcing the rock-solid foundation of the U.S.-Japan alliance.
