    Three U.S. Army soldiers salute the flag-draped casket of U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Walter R. Bateman during a dignified transfer on the tarmac of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Aug. 28, 2026. Members of the Patriot Guard Riders and local veterans lined the tarmac to pay their respects to Bateman, a Harford County, Maryland native and World War II pilot whose B-24D Liberator bomber went missing in action over Italy in 1943.
