Sailors assigned to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 1 perform a routine maintenance check on an E-2D Hawkeye, attached to VX-1, at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Point Mugu, California, September 9, 2026. VX-1 detached its E-2s and assigned maintenance personnel to NBVC Point Mugu to support Gray Flag. Gray Flag is the naval aviation test community’s premier large force test event. It brings together allied, joint, multi-domain partners and platforms to test integration and interoperability for emerging systems in a representative, relevant maritime environment. The principal mission of VX-1 is to test and evaluate airborne anti-submarine warfare, maritime anti-surface warfare, and airborne command and control platforms, as well as support systems, equipment and materials in an operational environment.
