American, 11th Airborne Division Commander, Major General John P. Cogbill meets with Australian and Japanese officials as part of Exercise Yama Sakura in Chitose, Hokkaido. The 1st Australian Division commenced Exercise Yama Sakura 91 in Japan on 02 September 2026. Exercise Yama Sakura is a trilateral command post exercise that enhances interoperability and readiness between the Australian Defence Force, the United States military and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The exercise focuses on planning and conducting large-scale combat operations as part of a coalition force. Approximately 340 ADF personnel participate alongside 1400 United States Army personnel, 350 United States Marine Corps personnel and 4,000 JGSDF personnel. Activities are conducted primarily at JGSDF Camps Higashi Chitose and Asaka in Japan, with supporting contingents operating from Hawaii. (Courtesy photo by GNR Jesse Linards)
