Army Maj. (Dr.) Jonathan Letterman, buried at Arlington National Cemetery, is the namesake of the historic Letterman Army Medical Center, now maintained by the National Park Service. Inventing battlefield evacuation during the Civil War, his “Letterman system” emphasized an organized structure for evacuating and transporting the wounded from battle. The hospital honored its namesake by treating thousands of warfighters throughout historical conflicts, and pioneering medical developments in artificial blood, laser physics, and trauma care.
