Two military personnel in full combat gear stand side by side on elevated terrain against an overcast sky. The left individual wears a woodland camouflage pattern uniform with a Norwegian flag patch visible on the shoulder, while the right individual wears MARPAT (Marine Pattern) digital camouflage consistent with U.S. Marine Corps uniforms. Both are equipped with tactical plate carriers, helmets with mounted accessories, and gloves, suggesting a joint multinational military exercise or operation.

A soldier with the Norwegian Home Guard's 3rd Platoon, District 11, stands with U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Joel Murcek, a fires support coordinator with Fires Support Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, on Jan Mayen Island, Norway, Aug. 31, 2026, in support of Operation Atlantic City 26. The moment reflected the combined operational readiness and rapid-response posture built during the exercise, ensuring NATO can quickly integrate critical assets across remote and austere terrain in the High North. Atlantic City 26 is a Norwegian-led trilateral readiness initiative with the United Kingdom and United States designed to develop and demonstrate expeditionary advanced base capabilities and validate combined fires, maritime domain awareness, and sea denial to reinforce the security and stability of the High North. Jan Mayen is sovereign Norwegian territory in an isolated part of the Norwegian Sea, approximately 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from mainland Norway. At the same time, the island occupies an important geostrategic position north of the Greenland-Iceland-U.K. gap, an area of water strategically significant to the defense of the U.S. homeland and northern Europe.
