Clay Demastus, seed orchard manager on the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, demonstrates what a quality western larch cone looks like near Sandpoint, Idaho, Aug. 14, 2026. The seed orchard produces around 60 bushels of western larch cones each year and more than 1,000 bushels of western white pine cones, which are sent to the Coeur d'Alene Nursery to produce seedlings. Replanting these seedlings supplies a sustainable level of timber products for current and future generations. (Forest Service photo)
