A member of the Fort William Henry Guard presents the certificate that New York Army Major Alex Hammond earned in 2004 while participating in the Kids Militia program at the Lake George Village, New York tourist attraction, following Hammond’ promotion ceremony on August 25, 2026. Hammond asked to have his promotion ceremony at the Fort William Henry Museum because he loved going there as a boy. The replica of the 1757 fort was rebuilt on the site of the August 1757 siege of Fort William Henry which figures in James Fenimore Cooper’s classic book “Last of the Mohicans.” ( U.S. Army photo by Stephanie Butler)
