A baby sea turtle hatchling is crawling across a sandy beach, illuminated by a red light source. The red lighting is consistent with conservation protocols used during turtle monitoring, as white light can disorient hatchlings. Human footprints are visible in the sand nearby, suggesting the presence of observers or researchers.

Green sea turtle hatchlings made their way to the ocean at Torii Beach, Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 13, 2026. The green sea turtles were the second species to hatch at Torii Beach this summer, following loggerhead sea turtles in July. U.S. Army Garrison Okinawa environmental personnel have monitored sea turtle nesting activity at Torii Beach since 2009. This year marks only the third time on record that both loggerhead and green sea turtles have nested at Torii Beach in the same year, previously occurring in 2012 and 2020.
