The 8th Infantry, known as the “Fighting Eighth,” traced its roots to the Hannibal Guard, organized by African Americans in Chicago in 1871. The unit later became the 8th Infantry Regiment of the Illinois National Guard and built a distinguished legacy of military service and leadership. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by 2nd Lt.
