NASA's ER-2 is derived from the U-2, and the pilots are retired U-2 pilots. Their team has been utilizing 120th Airlift Wing facilities, launching missions from the Montana Air National Guard Base to study wildfire smoke and other aerosols in earth's upper atmosphere since July, 2026.
