U.S. Navy Capt. David Huljack, commodore of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, center,
addresses assembled Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force members after receiving a Defense
Cooperation Medal at JMSDF Funakoshi Base Service Activity in Yokosuka, Japan, Aug. 7,
2026. The Defense Cooperation Medal is the highest award Japan Self-Defense Forces grant
to foreign service members. DESRON 15 is the Navy’s largest DESRON and U.S. 7th Fleet’s
principal surface force. U.S. 7th Fleet, the Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet,
routinely interacts and operates with allies and partners in preserving a free and open Indo-
