Eastern hemlock branches reach toward the sky in the Bankhead National Forest, Alabama, April 17, 2024. Eastern hemlock is the most shade tolerant tree species of eastern forests. The hemlock provides habitat for a number of avian and aquatic species, providing critical thermal cover.
