Two wildland firefighters set up a portable dip tank in a field next to an engine during the Ferris Fire near Cortez, Colorado, July 7, 2026. As the fire moved along the Dolores Canyon, crews relied heavily on aviation resources to keep flames from crossing the canyon into populated areas. Ignited by lightning on June 27, 2026, the Ferris Fire was a combination of three separate blazes (Far Draw, Doe Canyon, and Ferris) that merged near Narraguinnep Canyon, roughly 15 miles northwest of Dolores. The fire burned over 64,000 acres across Dolores and Montezuma counties before reaching full containment on August 5, 2026. (Forest Service photo by Benjamin Cossel)
