A fire lookout tower stands on a ridge above the surrounding forest near Cortez, Colorado, July 12, 2026. The Ferris Fire ignited from lightning on June 27, 2026, in southwest Colorado (actually three separate fires: Far Draw, Doe Canyon, and Ferris) that merged near Narraguinnep Canyon, about 15 miles northwest of Dolores. It grew rapidly to more than 64,000 acres across Dolores and Montezuma counties before reaching full containment on August 5, 2026. (Forest Service photo by Benjamin Cossel)
