A view of the downstream side of the dam at Loyalhanna Lake in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, July 9, 2026.

The two gantry cranes at Loyalhanna Lake are used to lift and lower the dam’s five crest gates to manage high inflows and provide additional flood mitigation for the region. Loyalhanna Lake is one of 16 flood-control projects in the Pittsburgh District. Since its completion in 1942, Loyalhanna Dam has prevented more than $658 million in flood damage.
