U.S. Army Spc. Holcomb assigned to B Battery, 1st Battalion, 201st Field Artillery Regiment, West Virginia Army National Guard, stands on the deck of a M109A6 Paladin in preparation for a nighttime live-fire mission during Exercise Northern Strike 26-2 at the National All-Domain Warfighting Center in Grayling, Michigan, Aug. 7, 2026. The green appearance of the image results from the use of an Astroscope night vision system, which allowed the photographer to document artillery operations under limited-light conditions. Nighttime fire missions challenge gun crews to maintain proficiency, communication and readiness while delivering indirect fires under reduced visibility.

Northern Strike is an Army-sponsored, multi-component, multinational exercise designed to build readiness and enhance interoperability to fight and win. Northern Strike 26-2, Michigan's largest and longest joint readiness exercise, is held Aug. 1-15, 2026, at the National All-Domain Warfighting Center. This year's exercise features approximately 9,000 participants. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. 1st Class Aaron Shuemake)
