Members of the U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) attach a rope to a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter before conducting Fast Rope Insertion and Extraction System (FRIES) training with U.S. Soldiers assigned to 3rd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Texas, July 29, 2026. FRIES allow units to deploy troops rapidly into hostile or restricted areas where aircraft are unable to land. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
