Andrew Wolfe, assigned to the 167th Airlift Wing, during a ceremony at the 167th Airlift Wing, Martinsburg, West Virginia, Aug. 2, 2026. Wolfe was recognized by the State of West Virginia for his distinguished service and sacrifice. While serving on the Safe and Beautiful Task Force, Wolfe and fellow Guardsman U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom were shot during an ambush in Washington, D.C. Spc. Sarah Beckstrom tragically lost her life in the attack. Following the attack, Wolfe was recognized and thanked by the President of the United States by being awarded the Purple Heart during the State of the Union Address before a Joint Session of Congress. The West Virginia Distinguished Service Medal honors current and former members of the West Virginia National Guard for conspicuous service performed in the line of duty.
