A Historic American Buildings Survey documentation photograph, reference number AK-36E-2, shows Hangar No. 1 at Ladd Field under construction in the winter of 1940-1941. A Douglas B-18 Bolo bomber, used by the U.S. Army Air Corps for cold-weather testing, is parked in the foreground. The construction of this hangar was a major undertaking and part of the strategic expansion of military infrastructure in Alaska just before the United States entered World War II.
