Soldiers from the U.S. Army's "Golden Knights" Tandem Parachute Team conducted tandem operations aboard a UV-18A Twin Otter at Signature Aviation in Frederick, Md., July 28. Tandem instructors harnessed twelve participants, including former MLB All-Star pitcher Jason Grilli and former NFL wide receiver Dontez Ford, then exited the aircraft at 12,500 feet for a freefall and canopy descent covering 2.5 miles to the ground at speeds up to 120 miles per hour. Passengers included regional leaders, teachers, principals and military personnel nominated by their communities across local Army recruiting battalion areas. The "Golden Knights," based at Fort Bragg, N.C., use tandem camps like this one to build relationships with local communities and highlight opportunities to serve.
