U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. James Conley, senior enlisted advisor for the 36th Engineer Battalion, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, discusses planned reinforcement measures for recently emplaced HESCO barriers with a civilian contractor at National Defense Area 2 near Fort Hancock, Texas, July 29, 2026. With civilian contractors having completed their portion of the construction effort, JTF-SB will employ Department of War capabilities to complete the next phase of barrier reinforcement in support of the mission along the U.S. southern border. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
