The 2026 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Civil Engineering Student Championships, hosted by Fairmont State University, held its concrete canoe competition at Tygart Lake in Grafton, West Virginia on June 26, 2026. This international event provides students with a unique opportunity to gain firsthand practical experience while assessing their skills with concrete mixes, hydrodynamic design, and project management. The commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, Col. Nicholas Melin, and two park rangers watch the University of Pittsburgh compete in the men’s slalom races at Tygart Lake, one of 16 flood control projects in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District. The reservoir supports navigation, flood control, water supply, and recreation for the Tygart River Valley, the Monongahela River, and the upper Ohio River.
