Lt. Gen. Allan M. Pepin, commander, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army), pins the Mexican Border Defense Medal on Brig. Gen. Mitchell J. Wisniewski III's lapel June 15, 2026, during a ceremony at Headquarters, 4th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. The command was awarded the medal for exceptionally meritorious service while deployed in support of the southern border mission. The Mexican Border Defense Medal was established Aug. 13, 2025, by the Secretary of War to recognize service members who deployed to the U.S. international border in support of Customs and Border Protection. Its design replicates the Mexican Border Service Medal authorized by Congress in 1918 as a tribute to military heritage. (U.S. Army Reserve photo by Maj. Mark D.L.
