Hundreds of people from the Great Sioux Nation gather at Sylvan Lake for the annual "Welcome Back the Thunders" ceremony in the Black Hills, South Dakota, March 21, 2026, before hiking to the sacred Black Elk Peak. The participants gathered at the lake before ascending to the peak, the highest point in South Dakota at 7,242 feet, to leave colorful Lakota prayer offerings and honor the spring equinox. During the seasonal gathering, representatives of the Great Sioux Nation Tribes and U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz met to sign a historic Memorandum of Understanding establishing a co-stewardship framework that safeguards the Black Elk Wilderness, respects tribal sovereignty, and protects the spiritual and ecological integrity of the area consistent with federal law.
