More than 700 family members, friends and colleagues participate in a candlelight vigil at Edwards Air Force Base, California, June 17. The vigil honored eight Airmen – military and civilian – who lost their lives June 15 when the B-52 bomber they crewed crashed immediately after takeoff. Many participants stood outside a filled-to-capacity chapel watching the service on-line. Toward the end of the service, all filed through the chapel, where they were given candles lit by a cadre of Air Force chaplains that they then placed before photos of the eight crewmembers. “They were dedicated professionals, beloved family members, and irreplaceable teammates,” Col. Thomas Tauer, 412th Test Wing commander, wrote to the base populace earlier that day. “[They leave] a void in our community that cannot easily be filled.” (Air Force photo by Lindsey Gordon)
