U.S. Marines with 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, communicate with a U.S. Border Patrol agent while utilizing L3Harris AN/PVS-31A night vision goggles to detect potential illicit border activity along the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego, Calif., June 9, 2026. Routine joint patrols and the utilization of specialized night vision assets allow military personnel to effectively assist federal law enforcement partners in maintaining situational awareness during low-light operations. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
