Staff Sgt. Latoya Moffett, a drillmaster, checks the alignment of recruits of Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, during their initial drill evaluation July 15, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. As an expert on the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonies Manual, Moffett, 29, from Ocilla, Ga., checked recruits' abilities to perform the drill movements. Close-order drill helps transform recruits into Marines by developing teamwork and unit cohesion. Close-order drill also instills discipline by teaching habits of precision and immediate response to orders. Lima Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 6, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
