This photo of a coyote was taken May 13, 2026, by a motion-triggered camera set up at Sherman Army Airfield at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, for wildlife surveys that are being conducted by Fort Hays State University scientists to support the Smithsonian Institute’s Snapshot USA Lewis and Clark Resurvey project. The project is being conducted across the nation to monitor wildlife along the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail and will eventually compare current data to observations recorded in the 1804-1806 Corps of Discovery expedition journals.
